A space for experimentation, development and regression for valuing and embracing process for becoming for re-thinking for rest and for waiting for changing your mind and starting again
Asemalabra is a turnkey cultural laboratory that encourages self-directed action in Asematila, the old waiting hall of Huopalahti’s old train station.
Asemalabra is an experimentally motivated project where the space is given to an operator or a group of makers for two weeks at a time. Within these two weeks, this space will be a platform for you and your experimentations, thinking, idleness, suggestions, dreaming, questions and sharing practices. During the laboratory, we wish you would approach some of the questions set for the autumn lab as you find meaningful. We propose a space to be your own (respecting values and rules) where to freely develop your ideas and forms, without goals of final results, but we aim that Asemalabra becomes a shared space too. We wish you to open up a bit to others about your process, your questions, the becoming of your project. It can be anything, a discussion, a presentation, a social experiment, an exhibition of a state of your process, a publication, a shared lunch, a nap, a gym session; something in Asematila or in Haaga area. It can have the length of your choice: two hours to two weeks. The working in Asemalabra is self organized, but people in Asematila ry are willing to support you in your process and making it public.
We hope Asemalabra will be a state of experimentation, processing and constant search for you.
During the autumn 2018 the themes of Asemalabra are continuity and a gift.
We invite you to participate in Asemalabra’s open call for projects and ideas that share an interest in developing and sharing your practice and thinking around the themes mentioned.
To whom?
The open call is for everybody. We invite an individual or a group coming from or interested in any field of culture. We are interested in your approach to some of our questions, and your interest in Asematila rather than your portfolio and your working background. Your values as an artist/maker/applicant/human/being are important to us.
Themes
Asemalabra’s season 2 consists of thematic proposals and questions which are CONTINUITY and A GIFT. We do not expect your proposal to completely take over/include/master all the themes; they are merely suggestions, guidelines or starting points for the applications/proposals. How are one or both of the following topics related to your proposal? The questions below the words are not there for you to answer if you don’t feel like it, they are more to open what we have asked ourselves while thinking them.
continuity
Do we have to strive for ‘better’ and ‘more’ or can we just be happy with what we already have? How long can things continue as they are? What would you like to continue?
a gift
What is it to give? What is it to receive? Is a gift ever/always gratuitous? Does a gift always have a element of uncertainty? Does one know what one will get?
When ?
Asemalabra takes place in Asematila in four periods of two weeks:

S2E4 15.-28.10.2018
The open call is open from the 21st June until the 19th of July 2018. We will go through the proposals as they arrive. All applicants will be informed about the final selection latest on 23rd July 2018.
What we offer?
A space for being/thinking/dreaming/doing/breathing for two weeks, during 9-21 o’clock daily.
Support from Asematila volunteers e.g discussing your process and making it public, depending on their time.
Small grant of 150 that can be used in any way the maker wants in order to support the artistic process.
How to apply?
If you are interested in participating in Asemalabra season 2 as an artist/maker/actor/being, make a proposal that opens up your plans and thoughts. In the proposal we wish you to answer at least these questions:

Tell in a nutshell/a short description what you intend to use the space for?
How you would like to share your practice/process?
Send your proposal as a pdf file to asemalabra(a)gmail.com by 19.7.2018 with the title ‘ASEMALABRA SEASON 2’. Since we aim to choose the makers based on the proposals, we will make the decisions anonymously. So please follow these steps:
- Pick a nickname with which you will name the proposal pdf file.
- Put the nickname in the pdf as well. Leave all other contact information out of the pdf.
- Write your contact info in the body text of the email. This information will be handled by a person not responsible for making the decisions of the open call.
Remember that we are on your side. The application doesn’t have to follow any specific form of writing. It can include pictures, notes, uncompleted thoughts, sound or be a letter. We are interested in hearing your voice in it. Asematila wants to give a space for diverse projects and users. We appreciate proposals that fit into the space and its values, and proposals with honest interest for sharing one’s thoughts and practices.

Asemalabra on itseohjautuvaan toimintaan kannustava, avaimet käteen- tyyliin toimiva kulttuurilaboratorio Asematilassa, Huopalahden vanhan juna-aseman entisessä odotustilassa.
Asemalabra on kokeelliseen toimijuuteen kannustava hanke, jossa tila annetaan työryhmälle, toimijalle tai joukolle toimijoita kahdeksi viikoksi kerrallaan. Näiden kahden viikon aikana tila toimii alustana kokeilla, ajatella, olla jouten, tehdä ehdotuksia, unelmoida, kysyä kysymyksiä sekä jakaa toimijuutta.
Toivomme sinun pohtivan Laboratorion aikana Asemalabralle asetettuja teemoja ja kysymyksiä haluamallasi sinulle merkityksellisellä tavalla. Haluamme tilan olevan sinulle paikka, jossa voit vapaasti ideoida, kokeilla ja toimia ilman painetta ennalta asetetuista tavoitteista tai lopputuloksesta. Toivomme kuitenkin, että avaat tilaa myös muille; jakamalla toimijuuttasi, tekemällä yhdessä, keskustelemalla, syömällä yhdessä, esityksin, näyttelyin, nokosin, jumppatuokioin… Tekemällä jotain avointa Asematilassa tai Haagan alueella. Jakaminen voi olla kahdesta tunnista kahteen viikkoon kestävä tapahtuma tai tapahtuminen. Työskentely Asemalabrassa on itseohjautuvaa, mutta Asematila Ry:n aktiivit ovat valmiita auttamaan sinua aikansa, tietojensa ja taitojensa puitteissa.

Haku on auki kaikille kulttuurin saralla toimiville tai siitä kiinnostuneille. Portfoliosi ja CV:si sijaan meitä kiinnostaa lähestymistapasi syksyn teemoihin ja aito kiinnostuksesi ja ja Asematilaa kohtaan.
Arvosi tekijänä/toimijana/taiteilijana/tyyppinä/ihmisenä ovat meille tärkeitä.
Teemat
Asemalabran syksy koostuu teemoihin linkitetyistä kysymyksistä ja ehdotuksista. Emme odota ehdotusten ottavan haltuun molempia teemoja vaan olemme kiinnostuneita siitä, miten sinä lähestyt niitä/ jompaa kumpaa niistä: ne ovat vain ehdotuksia, ohjenuoria tai mahdollisia lähtökohtia ehdotuksellesi. Alla olevat kysymykset ovat olleet mielessämme tämän vuoden teemoja pohtiessamme. Sinun ei kuitenkaan tarvitse vastata niihin, jos et halua.

Täytyykö aina pyrkiä enempään ja parempaan? Voiko tyytyä jo olevaan? Kuinka kauan asiat voivat pysyä ennallaan? Mitä sinä haluaisit jatkaa?
lahja
Mitä antaminen on? Mitä saaminen on? Onko lahja aina/koskaan pyyteetön? Liittyykö lahjaan aina epävarmuutta? Voiko koskaan tietää, mitä tulee saamaan?
Milloin?
Asemalabra on Asematilassa elokuussa 2018 jatkuva projekti, joka koostuu neljästä kahden viikon jaksosta:

Avoin haku on avoinna 21.6.–19.7. Käsittelemme hakemuksia sitä mukaa kun ne saapuvat, ja teemme lopulliset valinnat viimeistään 23. heinäkuuta. Haun päätyttyä olemme yhteydessä kaikkiin hakemuksen lähettäneisiin.
Mitä tarjoamme?
Tilan olemiselle, ajattelemiselle, unelmoinnille, tekemiselle, hengittämiselle kahdeksi viikoksi, klo 9-21 päivittäin.
Tukea Asematilan aktiiveilta, jotka auttavat sinua aikansa, tietojensa ja taitojensa puitteissa.
Pienen apurahan, suuruudeltaan 150 a, jonka tekijä voi käyttää haluamallaan tavalla taiteellisen prosessin tukemiseksi.
Miten haet?

- Valitse nimimerkki, jolla nimeät pdf-tiedostosi.
- Liitä nimimerkkisi pdf-tiedostoon ehdotuksesi yhteyteen. Jätä muut yhteys- ja henkilötiedot pois tiedostosta.
- Kirjoita yhteystietosi sähköpostin leipätekstiin. Näitä tietoja käsittelee henkilö, joka ei ole vastuussa avoimen haun valinnoista.
